A paean to the king of salamanders.
The largest salamander in the U.S, hellbender populations are in decline. Siltation, pollution and commercial collecting have decimated hellbenders everywhere. The Ozark hellbender is now critically endangered. Efforts are afoot to repopulate hellbenders. Hopefully it's not too late.
